In the Egyptian pantheon, Mout was Egypt's guardian. When shown with a pharaoh's head-dress, she becomes the goddess Nekhbet, the word also meaning guardian (protector).

The Egyptians believed that they were born of Mout. She was their mother; it was thanks to her that they had become so powerful. It was thus completely normal that the pharaoh, Egypt's protector, wear this emblem in his crown. The name of the king was often followed by the epithet, "Beloved by Mout".

Mout was represented by a female griffon vulture. Commonly called a griffon this timorous bird has a wingspan of up to ten foot but feeds off dead animals. Its zoological name is gyps fulvus.
